OUR EXPERT LOCAL GUIDE IN SCOTLAND, ANNA RIDDELL, REFLECTS ON HER TIME IN THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS OF MOROCCO

My recent trip to Morocco, through the H+I Global Guide Exchange, was not just a journey through breathtaking landscapes but also a remarkable opportunity to connect with Morocco’s passionate local guiding team led by Mohammed. The entire experience was truly transformative, and I can’t wait to share the highlights with you!

Connection: Creating Bonds Across the World

Connecting with the Moroccan team was nothing short of extraordinary! The warmth and energy they exuded made the week unforgettable. From the very first moment we met, it was clear that they were dedicated to ensuring our experience was exceptional. Each day, they greeted us with cheers, fist bumps, and high-fives, embodying a spirit of joy and support. Their enthusiasm was contagious!

Mohammed expressed genuine curiosity about the guiding I do in Scotland. This mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences not only deepened our bonds but also enriched our understanding of each other’s cultures. Mohammed was a treasure trove of knowledge, sharing captivating stories that brought the rich culture of Morocco to life. His insights allowed us to see the beauty in every corner of our travels, making each moment more vivid and meaningful.

Knowledge Exchange: Learning on Both Sides

Being on the ‘other side of the fence’ as a guided participant was a refreshing and enlightening experience. It allowed me to embrace the spectrum of emotions that riders often face—from nerves to excitement—as we navigated the unknown together. Experiencing the thrill of ‘blind riding’ was incredibly fun and pushed my limits while also reminding me of the trust we place in our guides.

This adventure has influenced my guiding style. The relaxed demeanor of the Moroccan team inspired me to adopt a more laid-back approach. Their emphasis on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems showcased a positive guiding philosophy that I admire. Although we come from vastly different climates and cultures—no mules to uplift bikes in Scotland!—the similarities in our guiding philosophies were both reassuring and motivating. It became clear that it’s not just the riding that made the trip exceptional; it was everything else too—from the food to the towns and accommodations. Understanding this holistic approach will enhance my appreciation for the full experience we offer in Scotland.

Collaboration: Crafting the Perfect Adventure

As an experienced guide, it was enlightening to observe the collaboration that makes these tours so exceptional. The entire package—routes, accommodations, and the seamless support from Mark—contributed to an extraordinary experience. We enjoyed delicious lunches in stunning settings, truly elevating our daily rides. The carefully curated routes allowed us to explore diverse regions, adding depth to our adventure.

Each unique experience created memories I will cherish. The hot air balloon ride was absolutely incredible—a highlight that will stick with me forever—along with the vibrant city of Marrakech.

I must add that I’ve become addicted to Moroccan mint tea! I can’t get enough of its refreshing flavour, and I’ve decided that dates will be my new go-to riding snack.

Overall, my time in Morocco was not just about the landscapes and cycling; it was about connections, learning, and a shared passion for guiding. I am grateful for the experiences I had and the bonds I formed, and I am eager to carry these lessons back to my guiding practice in Scotland. Here’s to many more adventures, knowledge exchanges, and collaborations within our Global Guide Community!
